Hello and welcome to the Share Six blog circle, this month our theme is ~pink~ and as it is also Breast Cancer Awareness month we would like to take the time to highlight this worthy cause, especially as it is something very close to my own heart. I'll be honest, October is not a great month for me, 27 years ago my beautiful Mum died from secondary Breast Cancer at the young age of 45 and in October 2015 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer myself. Thankfully I was caught early, I am still here, still fighting. I can't say it was or is easy, it is the hardest struggle of your life, I couldn't even begin to imagine what it must be like to go through chemo or a mastectomy like my Mum endured, it was tough enough going through an operation and radiotherapy and even now taking prescription medication for 5 - 10 years can and is affecting my mental, emotional and physical health. If you know someone who fought cancer and 'won' know that inside they are still fighting every day. Cancer is ugly. Cancer is painful. Cancer is anything but pretty in pink. ALL Cancers rear their ugly head every day of every single year! Cancer never ends....it's never over.....being a survivor is ugly, hard, beautiful and joyous all at once. So - women AND men......early detection can save lives, go check yourself or ask to get checked /screened BUT don’t wait until October to get your annual squish on. Keep up to date. Early detection is so vital to a great prognosis. Some Breast Cancer facts and statistics 2019 from Breast Cancer Now : Who develops breast cancer? Eight out of 10 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women aged 50 and over. One-quarter of cases are diagnosed in women aged 75 and over. Just over 10,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 50 every year in the UK. Of these, nearly 8,000 women will be in their 40s. Around 2,200 women in the UK are diagnosed aged 39 or under, or just 4% of all cases. Breast cancer in men is rare with just 370 new cases in the UK each year, compared to around 55,000 new cases in women. How many people survive breast cancer? Almost nine in 10 (87%) women survive breast cancer for five years or more. Breast cancer survival is improving and has doubled in the past 40 years in the UK due to a combination of improvements in treatment and care, earlier detection through screening and a focus on targets, including faster diagnosis. An estimated 600,000 people are alive in the UK after a diagnosis of breast cancer. This is predicted to rise to 1.2 million in 2030. For many the overwhelming emotional and physical effects of the disease can be long-lasting. How many people die from breast cancer? Every year around 11,500 women and 80 men die from breast cancer in the UK – that’s nearly 1,000 deaths each month, 31 each day or one every 45 minutes. Breast cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in the UK. Breast cancer is a leading cause of death in women under 50 in the UK.
